Essay Pitch Requirements
In writing for No Multiple Faces there are not a set of strict guidelines, as such, but there is a foundation that I’d like to set for our writing to build upon.
The intention underpinning NMF emphasises that everything we enjoy, think, believe, and feel, is a part of our one self, with our own experiences shaping such thoughts - and in turn, our writing styles. Regardless of what you choose to write, whether it’s an overuse of ‘I’ prompted by a mid-conversation-epiphany, or an intricately planned research piece, I want to hear your own voice as its undertone. The way that the things you write about look through your lens is important, and it’s entirely personal. Each piece cannot be replicated once you’ve written it!
Research pieces can cover a wide scope of topics, but ideally stick to one of the main focuses: education, gender/race/class disparities (can cover health, housing, education, etc), societal structures. Fashion writing is accepted, but it would ideally fall under one of the aforementioned categories.
Although this may seem a narrow selection of topics, the priority of the writing at NMF is that it can be properly reviewed, fact checked, and published with complete confidence. However, if there is something that you feel would fit well that hasn’t been explicitly mentioned, submit your idea anyway and I will happily talk with you about it.
These educational pieces should read to you like a friend explaining something.. Not an excerpt from a textbook, or a word-by-word from your favourite teacher, but somebody explaining a topic that they know well, to a person that they know well - even if the writer is a stranger from an entirely different continent.
As for first-person pieces, there is much more free reign.
If there’s a recent journal entry that’s stuck in your mind since you wrote it, or a conversation with a friend that you keep returning to, write about it here. Appropriateness for the platform can be decided on a piece-by-piece basis, but if you feel inclined to write about it, I am happy to consider it.
Now for the technical side of things:
-All essays must be a minimum of 500 words, not exceeding 1,200 words (although I am lenient).
-Kindly do not send full essays through the submission box/email. If you can fill out the form with a detailed idea of the article that you’d like to write, I will do my best to respond within 7 days.
This platform highly values the perspectives of others, and any submitted articles are incredibly appreciated. Despite what is outlined above, we are lenient with what we accept, and if your essay idea does not feel like it fits what is written, do not hesitate to ask anyway!
